Another day another hair care line is launched. I don’t know about you but it feels like brands are launching a new line every month. How are we supposed to keep up?
I am a recovering product junkie. That’s right there was a point in my hair journey when I bought practically every product that an influencer tried and liked. Even if their hair looked nothing like mine it was worth it to try. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing except for my wallet feeling the pain. Earlier in my journey, I had to figure out what my hair did and didn’t like. Additionally, I have four natural hair individuals living with me.
Eventually I began to figure out what ingredients and what items I did and didn’t need to try. Some products I buy for my husband and others for my girls.
Currently, I have four different kinds of leave in conditioners in my bathroom, and they’re all being used frequently. I’m going to have to write a post on the top ten leave-ins for the whole family or something like that because I’ve got quite the list for you. Reasoning for the Purchase
About two weeks ago, my family and I went to the beauty supply store--which is something I try not to do too often being a recovering product junkie. My husband was looking for some Shea butter, and lo and behold we found the new As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Olive & Tea Tree Oil line.
I couldn’t pass it up. Instead, I said “Hey, Babe look at this!” There were two reasons why I didn’t just keep walking past yet another new line.
The first reason is I am a true believer in the As I Am brand. Their original line Co-Wash, Double Butter Cream and Hydration Elation got me through my first two years of being natural. They are absolutely holy grail products.
My husband has gone through at least ten bottles of that line’s leave in conditioner.
Don’t even get me started on how much I love their second line Long & Luxe for type 3-4 hair. That line’s co-wash, which is named Gro-Wash is even better than its predecessor. Whenever i’m asked about product recommendations, I insist that everyone with natural type 3-4 hair try the GroWash. It’s the one product that I purchase as a gift for others.
The second reason is my husband deals with seborrheic dermatitis, which is a skin condition that typically affects the scalp and can cause red, itchy, dry flakes or dandruff. We have tried a number of different shampoos, which sometimes work or don’t work at all.
I’m always on the lookout for a product that will give him some relief and get rid of his dandruff. He likes to use tea tree oil for itchy scalp and finds that it helps some. So here was a product line that claims to treat dry itchy scalp associated with seborrheic dermatitis and has tea tree oil...jackpot! The First Test
We purchased the shampoo, conditioner and scalp oil treatment, as we didn’t need the other two products in the line: the co-wash and leave in conditioner.
My husband, who got a haircut that same day and now had an incredibly irritated scalp, tried them that night. Both the shampoo and conditioner have Zinc Pyrithione, which treats dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. The oil treatment has Salicylic Acid, which relieves dry skin and scalp.
He reported feeling a tingling soothing feeling after washing, conditioning and applying the oil treatment. So far he has used the shampoo and conditioner three times, and is seeing less flakes.
The Second Test
I don’t suffer from the same skin ailment as my husband. However, for some reason, whenever I wear my hair in box braids or mini twists (basically any style where my scalp is exposed) my scalp becomes incredibly inflamed, and I deal with dandruff and an itchy scalp.
Since the seasons are changing, I wanted to begin my summer regimen of wearing my hair in mini twists at least once a month and then wearing my wash and go the remaining time. Read my post on Grow Your Hair: Why you should be wearing mini twists To prep my hair and scalp for the mini twists, I used the Tea Tree & Olive Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. I also deep conditioned with my As I Am Hydration Elation hair mask. This deep conditioner always leaves my hair so moisturized and soft. Detangling is an inevitable breeze whenever I use this product.
I waited about three days before I put the oil treatment on my scalp, because I don’t like applying oil directly to my scalp after washing my hair. It has been nine days since I installed my twists and my scalp is 100% itch free.
This result is unprecedented for me. Normally by day four or five my scalp begins to itch and after the week mark I begin to see flakes. Neither of these things have occurred. I’m wonderfully in awe and shock.
Typically I keep my mini twists in for two weeks because that is as long as I can stand before I have to take them out and relieve my suffering scalp. But today will mark twelve days, and my scalp is still itch and flake free.
The Result
As I Am has done it again. They are one of only two major brands that I have tried that has yet to release a line that disappointed. I know these products are now must haves for my husband, and also have forced me to find a place for them in my product rotation.
The As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Olive & Tea Tree Oil line can be found at Sally’s Beauty along with the other two great lines by this brand. If you click below you can get 20% off an online purchase. This deal only lasts through June 15th so stock up now.
So if you have dry itchy scalp or dandruff to get rid of be sure to try this new As I Am line.
